Diagnosis and procedures

As interventional radiologists, we use X-rays, ultrasound or other imaging techniques to guide small tubes (catheters) and needles directly to the site of the disease. We are skilled in using the vascular system to deliver targeted treatments via a catheter throughout the body. In treating cancer patients, we can attack the tumor directly from inside the body without medicating or affecting other parts of the body.

Diagnosis

Liver – primary cancer

Primary liver cancer occurs when the main cells of the liver (hepatocytes) become cancerous. Known as hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), this abnormal cell growth is the most common type of liver cancer. Continue reading…

Liver – metastatic cancer

Liver cancers don’t all originate in the liver. Developing in other parts of the body, cancer cells can make their way to the liver due, in part, to how the organ works. Continue reading…

Kidney cancer

Kidney cancer strikes close to 39,000 Americans on an annual basis. It is the eighth most common cancer in men and tenth in women. Continue reading…

Lung – primary cancer

Cancer is often described as cell growth that has gone awry. Old cells do not die as they should. New cells start forming when they are not needed. Continue reading…

Lung – metastatic cancer

Cancer cells like normal cells have access to the body’s main means of transporting vital nutrients and carting away waste products: the bloodstream or lymphatic system. Continue reading…

Procedures

Chemoembolization

Chemoembolization is a method used to deliver chemotherapy directly to liver tumors – either tumors that originated in the liver (primary liver cancer) or tumors that spread (“metastasized”) to the liver from other sites (ie, colon or breast cancer). Continue reading…

Cryoablation

Cryoablation offers a non-surgical localized method for shrinking and killing tumor cells by freezing them while sparing healthy tissue. Continue reading…

Radioembolization – radiation microspheres

An innovative treatment for liver cancer, radiation microspheres provide an effective vehicle for delivering radiation directly to the site of tumors while sparing healthy tissue. Continue reading…

Portal vein embolization (PVE)

Portal Vein Embolization is a relatively new pre-surgical procedure employed in the planning of major liver cancer surgery. Continue reading…

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA)

Radiofrequency ablation offers a non-surgical localized method for shrinking and killing tumor cells with heat while sparing healthy tissue. Continue reading…

Tumor biopsy

Diagnostic testing provides vital information in confirming the presence of disease and then selecting appropriate treatment. Continue reading…
